JIbo Leader in AI assistants: Machines must seem more human

by Jeremy Solomons | in News

The team behind JIBO also realized the importance of expression. JIBO uses a more simple design: one eye-like shape looks out from the circular top of the object. It moves and changes as JIBO communicates.

jibo_robot_design_psfk.jpgJIBO’s VP of Design, Blade Kotelly, explains that the team focused on creating “core expressive traits” and deciding on movements that “express ideas that refer to human expression.” He explains more in an email:

When Jibo wants to indicate that something amuses him, he can smile – when you smile your cheek pushes up below your eye – and the body can animate accordingly. If we wanted to express thinking, we can slide the eye over to a corner of the screen and move the body – just like a human would do. This way, the user can quickly, and naturally, understand what the robot is trying to convey emotionally.

The team also focused on speech patterns, but finding the right wording doesn’t make the machine seem more human—it comes down to more subtle features than that. As Kotelly explains, expressiveness can also be found in non-verbal sounds, something the team calls “semi-speech.”

jibo_AI_robot_psfk.jpg“The design team works to determine the right balance of speech and semi-speech at every part of the dialog, in order to create a balance that feels both natural and incredibly special for every Jibo owner,” wrote Kotelly.

by Jeremy Solomons | in News

cylance-logo-black-stackedPartnership will further enhance breakthrough artificial intelligence and machine learning development for cybersecurity applications.

Irvine, California, Feb. 16, 2016 – Cylance, the company that is revolutionizing cybersecurity with products and services that use artificial intelligence to proactively prevent advanced persistent threats and malware, today announced a strategic partnership with In-Q-Tel (IQT). IQT is the investment organization that identifies innovative technology solutions to support the missions of the U.S. Intelligence Community. The agreement with IQT supports further development of Cylance’s artificial intelligence and machine-learning technology for cybersecurity applications.

Cylance and its next-generation endpoint threat prevention product, CylancePROTECT®, uses a radically different technological approach to cybersecurity that employs artificial intelligence to determine what is safe and what is not by analyzing the DNA of files before they execute. Cylance integrates a deep understanding of hackers and attack vectors with the most sophisticated artificial intelligence and algorithmic science to neutralize virtually all malicious files before they can do harm. This approach prevents advanced persistent threats and malware from ever executing, effectively redefining the standard of endpoint security.

“Cylance is changing the fundamentals of how cyberattacks are identified and prevented,” said Peter Kuper, Partner on IQT’s Investments team. “Our partnership with Cylance is intended to further enhance how artificial intelligence and related technologies prevent malware and advanced threats from ever executing. Reducing the risks posed by cyberthreats is critical in supporting the missions of our government customers.”

“This strategic partnership with In-Q-Tel will better secure our government and our nation from cyberattacks, which are escalating in number and sophistication,” added Stuart McClure, president and CEO of Cylance.

Cylance Added to Dell Machines

by Jeremy Solomons | in News

cylance-logo-black-stackedDell is developing what it call “the most secure PCs in the industry” with a new feature which checks the BIOS of a PC against a reference image of that BIOS stored with Dell offsite.

Dell has also added a new artificial intelligence and machine learning protection product it from Cylance. According to Dell, its newest BIOS verification function uses a cloud server to test the BIOS image on a PC, to verify that those computers have not been compromised. Malware that hacks into a PC’s BIOS is notorious for being impossible to remove, and has even been used by government intelligence agencies to compromise machines.

Prelert Launching a New Retail Order Analytics Solution

by Jeremy Solomons | in News

prelert_newsSpecialist in IT operation and security analytics Prelert, has turned its expertise on the problem and is launching a new Retail Order Analytics solution. It’s aimed at helping online and multichannel retailers to identify technical and operational issues as they’re happening in order to stem losses and protect revenue streams.

Built using unsupervised machine learning technology, Prelert’s solution automates data analysis and detects the periodic nature of daily and weekly order cycles. It adapts to changing data patterns that may result over time due to factors like a new product becoming available or current events that cause a spike in product interest.

“A significant drop in the number of orders taken by an e-commerce site during a particular day might be obvious in retrospect, but can be very difficult to catch in near real time without automated machine learning. Static thresholds and even moving averages can’t reliably identify issues,” says Mark Jaffe, CEO of Prelert. “Our anomaly detection algorithms have been proven to work and provide significant ROI within hundreds of progressive IT organisations around the globe. We can provide the same value now for retail and e-commerce organisations, with a solution tailored specifically for them”.

Cylance Positioned as a Visionary in the 2016 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Endpoint Protection Platforms

by Jeremy Solomons | in News

Cylance logo

From the Jakarta Post, February 4, 2016

Cylance, the company that is revolutionizing cybersecurity through the use of artificial intelligence to proactively prevent advanced persistent threats and malware, today announced that it has been positioned the furthest for completeness of vision in the Visionaries Quadrant of the latest Gartner Magic Quadrant for Endpoint Protection Platforms (EPP).

Gartner uses “market understanding” as one of the evaluation criteria in positioning an endpoint protection platform vendor’s completeness of vision along with offering (product) strategy, innovation and geographic strategy.

“We believe being positioned the furthest for completeness of vision in the Visionaries Quadrant is a powerful validation of our vision of using artificial intelligence and machine learning to level the playing field for organizations struggling with the constant influx of zero-day malware,” said Cylance Founder and CEO Stuart McClure. “We’re enthusiastic about equipping more organizations with our new breed of preventive technology that can stop malware and attacks before they ever execute—an ability that security professionals and C-suite executives in our market know to be absolutely critical.”
